How can a restriction enzyme help us tell the difference between different samples of DNA?

A restriction enzyme is used by investigators to solve crimes and sometimes to test who are the parents of an offspring. The enzyme shows the DNA segments at different patterns and if they match up, that person/object is related to the DNA segment.
