AC is the adjacent leg to C and BC is the hypotenuse.  So we're talking about the cosine:

[tex]\cos C = \dfrac{AC}{BC}[/tex]

For part 2, the co in cosine means "complementary" so cos x equals the sine of the complementary angle, that's going to be

[tex]\sin y[/tex]
