Any two consecutive numbers can be written as

' X '  and  ' X + 1 ' .

Their sum is [ x + (x+1) ] = 2x+1

You said the sum is 53, so

2x + 1 = 53

Subtract 1 from each side:

2x = 52

Divide each side by 2:

x = 26

The numbers are  26  and  27 .
