"a" is an absolute value, so that means that after whatever is in the brackets is solved as far as it can be, it becomes a positive value, no matter what it is. So, |-1.4| is equal to 1.4. The equation is 1.4+ (-2.7) or 1.4 - 2.7 which equals -1.3
