Simplify. Isolate the x. Note the equal sign. What you do to one side, you do to the other.

Note that 3/3 = 1

9 = 8 + 3/3

x + 1/3 (-1/3) = 8 3/3 (-1/3)

x = 8 3/3 (-1/3)

x = 8 2/3
