Let x be the number of cans.

Let A be the number of cans Amelia has.

Let B be the number of cans Elliot has.

GIVEN:

A=5x-13

B=x

n(total number of cans) = 257

Solution:

a) A+B=257

(5x-13)+x=257

combine like terms.

6x=257+13

6x=270

x=270/6

x=45... 45 is the number of cans Elliot has

b) x = 45

A= 5x-13

=5(45)-13

=225-13

=212.. the number of cans Amelia has.

A+B=257

212+45=257

257=257
