Why and how did the south defend slavery after 1831?

Well before 1830 the south defended slavery just out of pure necessary evil. However, after 1831 their ideology changed and they began to defend slavery as  "positive good." They blindly argued that slaves were in a good condition and were happy, content and well cared for. Moreover, they made up all sorts of things saying slavery was better then being an actual worker.
