Mark Twain called the late 19th Century the "Gilded age" . So Mark Twain meant that the period was glittering on the surface but corrupt underneath.

The "Gilded Age" got it's name because it was succesful and wealthy on the outside but corrupt on the inside. The person that named it the Gilded Age was Mark Twain who wrote a book about the time.
