It is an unwritten code of conduct for upperclassmen, or a set of manners for noblemen and gentlewomen. It tells us that when women are a protected class, they are less than equal. Chivalry also shows that the rules of proper conduct only applied to one class, this being the upper class. Lastly, it tells us that the proper behavior or knights was serious back then.
