Answer: At the time the Brits where dependent on Southern Cotton imports for their cotton needs and so the South thought they could sort of blackmail the British into helping them in the Civil war. Little did the South know that the British where finding other sources within their own empire so that they didn't need to be so dependent on Southern Cotton.
