Early in WWll, soldiers weren't really willing to fight yet, so it was called the phony war. The Germans gave this the name of Sitzkrieg which, when translated, literally means sitting war. On the Eastern border of France, soldiers set up fortifications and just sat staring at German troops who had fortifications set up a few miles away from France.
