why don't infections make you ill straight away

well the virus takes ages to attack your immune system. There are antibodys in you so they cn protect you, but not always. For example. At the moment, ebola attacks the same immunity cells as HIV, making it deadly. Antibodys create shapes to kill the pathogen but makes you ill in the process. I dont know anymore.
