The following are the environmental obstacles encountered by settlers trying to farm the prairie during the second half of the nineteenth century:

  • The cutting of grass over large pieces of land was not possible easily as there was no advanced mechanism available.
  • The winds that blew over the large Prairies were an obstacle in the cultivation of crops.
  • The Prairies were very much prone to soil erosion.
  • Irrigating the large fields was difficult as the water had to be lifted from distant sources of water.
