Operating industrial labor was simply dangerous because safety mechanisms and protocols weren't quite established; so people who worked with the machines could be fatally injured if they weren't careful. Also, most of the industrial machines back in the earlier 20th century were rather new.
You can imagine all the kinks that had to be worked out!
