If you mean the English colonists in what is now the United States, they viewed themselves as Englishmen. In fact, their initial claims (before the Declaration of Independence) is that they were being denied the rights of Englishmen.. Some of the colonists remained loyal to the British while those who stood against them fought the revolutionary war
