The caste system is the system of the social hierarchy in India which has existed since ancient times. Some variants of it still are followed today.
People are separated in the types and classes in accordance with their socioeconomic situation as well as by birth and clans.The system puts people in social categories based on certain traits, their occupation, or the family in which they are born. Members of certain casts should not communicate with the other, higher people.
The term cast is not derived from the Hindu. It is the English word for the system which is adopted over time by Indians as a result of colonization, while they also use their local term.
