the answer is a=-3. just add the -2 and the 3 so that would be a+1=-2 then subtract the 1 from both sides to get the a alone.
a-2+3=-2
a-1=-2 add three to negative 2 to equal negative 1
a=-1 add 1 to negative 2 to make it negative 1
a-1=-2 add three to negative 2 to equal negative 1
a=-1 add 1 to negative 2 to make it negative 1
