Kant dice che le virtù stesse - l'uniformità di temperamento, la pazienza, possono essere trasformate in cattive se vengono usate per il male. Per Kant, quindi, la "bontà" segue la "giustizia". Ciò che è buono è buono perché è l'espressione di una volontà razionale, perché si realizza in accordo con i principi universali della ragione.
