The distance between two numbers [tex]x[/tex] and [tex]y[/tex] is given by the absolute value of their difference, [tex]|x-y|[/tex].

So the distance on the number line between [tex]12[/tex] and [tex]-5[/tex] is

[tex]|12-(-5)|=|12+5|=|17|=17[/tex]
