Why did US and coalition troops try to stop Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait?

I think it's because of the oil there, they ended up doing 'OP Desert Shield' before 'OP Desert Storm' because they wanted to defend Kuwait's oil fields. It's just Government Money really.
