The giver offered the memory of the past of their people to Jonas. Jonas responded with great fear and resistance because along with the beautiful memories of the past came with the ugly, bad, and evil wrongdoings of many. It took a lot of training and time for Jonas to have realized the importance of such past events in shaping the way their community functions.
