In section 2 of the book, The Alchemist, the old man said that he is the King of Salem. The boy named Santiago has never heard of Salem, therefore, he thought that the old man was crazy. To convince the boy, the old man then proceeded to write the names of Santiago's mother and father in the sand using a nearby stick. Much to the surprise of Santiago because he never mentioned his parents' names to the old man.
