Lee
believed that if he could destroy the Army of the Potomac (or a
significant portion of it) on Union soil, either public opinion in the
North would force Lincoln to make a negotiated peace that recognized the
CSA as a sovereign,independent country,or Britain and France would
officially recognize the CSA,which would have the same effect.
