In William Gibson's The Miracle Worker, Annie mentions three advantages she has, including Dr. Howe's work, her own youth, and her blindness. She guides a young Helen Keller how to read and also teaches her American sign language since the latter is also deaf. In the end, Helen herself went to the Perkins Institute for the Blind to further pursue her education.
