The Master of Lake-town had a good head for business, but he also proved himself a greedy coward. He led the Lakemen successfully for two decades, while promoting good trade with the Elves. But his cowardice in fighting Smaug and in the Battle of the Five Armies made him lose popularity among the people.
But the answer would be if the elves wants thorin to leave or stay due to masters first doubt of him.
