John has a roll containing 24 3/4 feet of wrapping paper. He wants to divide it into 11 pieces. First though he must cut off 5/6 foot because it was torn. How long will each price be?
Easiest way to solve this is to convert the length of wrapping paper into an improper fraction. So we have
24 3/4 = (4*24+3)/4 = 99/4
Now subtract the 5/6 feet of paper. First determine the common
denominator for 4 and 6, which is 12. Then convert both fractions to the
same denominator.
99/4 - 5/6 = 297/12 - 10/12 = 287/12
Now divide by 11 by simply multiplying the denominator by 11.
287/12 / 11 = 287/12 * 1/11 = 287/132
And finally convert from an improper fraction to a proper fraction.
