When a person pays bail, they are temporarily freed from prison. When bail is set, it fits the punishment of the crime. Small crimes have a lower bail while serious federal crimes result in a significant price for bail.

Even though bail allows the person to be free temporarily, the person is still expected to show up to court on the date of their court case.
