By getting the audience into a state in which they are completely focused on the presentation, to the point where they are sucked into it, welles would be able to throw them off with something larger than what is expected. In this way, the audience would be a point where the presentation seemed to be the real, but would then be introduced to a surreal object. This would surprise the audience, bring them out of the production and aware of the fact that this is a production and not reality.
