The ego is the part of the personality that is the mediator. The id and superego are the contrasting elements that constantly struggle for supremacy in a person's day-to-day actions. The id is the part of the personality that wants everything at that moment, while the superego is the aspect that takes into account morals and proper aspects of behavior. The ego works to find a middle ground between the two.
