the temperature in new york city fell 5 degrees from a temperature of 3 degrees. if the temperature rose 7 degrees, what is the temperature now.

If it started at 3 degrees and fell 5, we have: 

3-5 = -2 degrees

Then, if it rose 7 degrees, we have:

-2 + 7 = 5

It is 5 degrees now.
