Why is simply counting currency an inadequate measure of money?

Money is anything that can be used to buy goods or services, it entails several things which includes, checks, deposits, e-cash and many other forms of payments that are more than just paper or coin money. Therefore, simply counting currency is an inadequate measure since it only considers a small portion of money.
