The common denominator of the two fractions is: 8
1/4 = (1*2)/(2*4) = 2/82/8 = (1*2)/(1*8) = 2/8
Fractions adjusted to a common denominator1/4 + 2/8 = 2/8 + 2/82/8 + 2/8 = (2+2)/8(2+2)/8 = 4/84/8 = 1/2
The answer is 1/2.

hope this helps.
