The main political groups that existed in the colonies in the 1770s were the "Patriots" and the "Loyalists"--the Patriots got their name because they viewed themselves as being patriotic to the colonies for wanting to separate from Britain, and the Loyalists got theirs because they wanted to remain loyal to Britain.
