Silver and regulations were needed--the recessions of 1873 and 1893 pushed the Free Silver movement and regulation of railroads to encourage economic growth.
Populists believed the use of silver for currency would increase cash flow and enable farmers to pay off debts. Populists also wanted regulation of railroads to protect the interests of the farmer and small business owner instead of the corporate leaders.
