When this given compound is treated with base, the hydroxyl hydrogen is abstracted and an alkoxide ion is formed. The alkoxide ion formed undergoes intramolecular attack on the carbon attached to bromine. On elimination of bromide a six membered ring (Pyran derivative) is formed. The reaction is as follow,
